Loma Linda University. June 2014. Over the past decade I have devoted significant time and energy to teaching and tutoring. Teaching is important to me because I place such high value on lifelong learning and education, and also because I find real enjoyment in helping others achieve their educational and academic goals. For these reasons I have always taken personal vested interests in my students, and have worked hard to hone my teaching skills and provide the best service to my students. My teaching philosophy for each new student is to identify his or her strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to make improvements using discussion-based teaching sessions, focused feedback, readings and practice problems. Together we determine academic goals and make specific plans to achieve these goals. One medical student came to me in real danger of failing multiple courses, but after feedback about study techniques, time use, focus topics, and working through a tutoring and study plan together, she was able to pass all classes and was incredibly thankful for the time we put in together. I’ve also observed many medical student colleagues study for USMLE exams with the uncertainty and stress of being unable to pass or achieve the career goals they have worked so hard to pursue. I know how much of a difference a strong tutoring relationship can make, and this drives me to continue teaching and to be the best possible tutor.
